Terms of participation

1. The organizer of the competition "The Great ZM300 Challenge" is Retsch GmbH, Retsch-Allee 1-5, 42781 Haan.
   
   
2. The competition is not affiliated with LinkedIn and is not sponsored or endorsed by LinkedIn.
   
   
3. Any person 18 years of age or older is eligible to participate. Employees of Retsch GmbH or companies affiliated with Retsch GmbH, as well as their family members are excluded from participation in the competition. Each person may participate in the competition only once. Participation is only possible in one\'s own name.
   
   
4. Participation via competition clubs, agencies or automated services is excluded.
   
   
5. In order to participate in the competition, the participant must register via the online form at https://www.retsch.com/zm300-challenge and upload a photo showing him/her and a ZM-Ultra centrifugal mill of the ZM series via the online form. When registering using the online form, participants must provide their first name, last name, the country in which the employer is located, their business email address and the serial number of the ZM mill. Only those who fill out the form completely and independently as well as upload the photo can participate.
   
   
6. Closing date for submitting the online form is 30.09.2022 .
   
   
7. A total of 10 winners will be determined. The first prize will be won by the participant who owns the oldest model of the ZM-Ultra centrifugal mill. This will be determined by Retsch GmbH based on the serial number provided. The winners of the 2nd to 10th prize will be determined by lot among the remaining participants.
   
   
8. The following prizes are available:
   
   1st prize: A ZM300 as basic unit
   
   2nd prize: A goods voucher worth 2500 € 
   
   3rd prize: A goods voucher worth 1500 €
   
   4th prize to 10th prize: One merchandise voucher worth 500 € each.
   
   
   
9. Winners will be contacted by email for the purpose of prize notification and processing.

1. Standard method: The complete amount of material to be sieved is placed on the sieve with the finest mesh size. After sieving and weighing the fraction, the oversize is placed on the next larger sieve and sieved again. This procedure is continued until the complete sample is separated into fractions.
   
   
2. “Swiss Method”: The sample is first divided into the number of size classes to be determined and then each part is sieved individually with the corresponding sieve. This method can only provide reliable results if the sample division was carried out representatively to keep the particle size distribution in all part samples identical. The best results are obtained by rotary sample dividers, such as RETSCH’s PT100, which divide the initial material into 6, 8 or 10 identical partsamples.

1. The jet of air causes a continuous new orientation of the particles onthe sieve surface. Particles with sizes smaller than the sieve aperturesare sucked in by the vacuum cleaner.
   
   
2. When using sieves of 25 mm height, the inflowing air causes theparticles to impact on the lid which helps to destroy agglomerates.

  Best suited for hard or embrittled materials due to its resistance to impact. This container is also used for cryogenic grinding with dry ice.

• Stainless steel knife:
  Perfectly suited for standard applications.
  
  
• Serrated blade knife:
  Particularly suitable for homogenizing tough sample materials like meat with rind or smoked bacon.
  
  
• Knife with pure titanium blades:
  Used for heavy-metal-free sample homogenization to prevent abrasion of iron or chrome into the sample.

• Standard lid: 
  Perfectly suited for standard applications.
  
  
• Reduction lid 0.3 l and 0.5 l:
  These lids reduce the volume of the grinding container to 0.3 l / 0.5 l and are therefore particularly suitable for homogenizing small sample amounts.
  
  The volume reduction increases the efficiency of the grinding process compared to the use of the standard lid, because the sample is more often pushed against the knife blades. Moreover, the rounded concave underside of the lid promotes excellent mixing and homogenization of the sample.
  
  
• Gravity lid:
  Particularly suitable for homogenizing materials which lose volume during the grinding process, like hay. 
  
  The lid automatically reduces the container volume which results in the sample being constantly pushed against the knife blades. This increases the efficiency of the process.
  
  
• Gravity lid with overflow channels:
  Particularly suitable for homogenizing materials with a high liquid content which first take up more room but lose quite a lot of volume during the grinding process, like tomatoes.

• Standard lid: 
  Perfectly suited for standard applications.
  
  
• Lid for dry ice applications: 
  Used for cryogenic grinding with dry ice. It has an opening through which the evaporating CO₂ escapes to prevent overpressure inside the container.
  
  
• Gravity lid:
  Particularly suitable for homogenizing materials which lose volume during the grinding process, like hay. 
  
  The lid automatically reduces the container volume which results in the sample being constantly pushed against the knife blades. This increases the efficiency of the process.
  
  
• Gravity lid with overflow channels:
  Particularly suitable for homogenizing materials with a high liquid content which first take up more room but lose quite a lot of volume during the grinding process, like tomatoes.

• Agate (density 2.6 g/cm³; hardness 6.5 – 7 Mohs, low abrasion resistance) 
  a highly pure natural material suitable for pulverizing soft to medium-hard or fibrous samples. Due to its low-density agate is suitable for gentle grinding processes with low energy input. 
  
  
• Zirconium oxide (density 6.05 g/cm³; hardness 1250 HV, high abrasion resistance) ceramic material suitable for pulverizing medium-hard to hard and fibrous samples. It is typically used for heavy-metal-free grinding processes or applications which aim at ultrafine particle sizes. 

• Glass beads are suitable for applications like cell disruption, for example of yeast, bacteria or microalgae. For yeast larger glass beads are best suited whereas microalgae require small beads. Glass beads are also used for washing bacteria off surfaces or tissue samples for subsequent diagnosis.

The easy handling of grinding jars with a push-fit lid allows for a high sample throughput.

Always select a grinding jar size suitable for the sample volume (approx. 30% of the jar is filled with sample material). Grinding jars are provided in sizes ranging from 1,5 ml to 25 ml (not all sizes available in all materials).

The document “Grinding Jar Ball Charge” in the Downloads section provides details about usable volumes, maximum feed sizes and correct filling of the jars with grinding balls for dry and wet milling as well as cell disruption.

For efficient and contamination-free grinding processes the grinding jars are available in 6 different materials (no undesired abrasion).

The energy input increases with the density of a material. For pulverizing soft samples, materials with a low to medium density should be used, whereas for hard samples it is better to use high-density materials.

For cold grinding (cryogenic grinding) we recommend using the Cryo kit which consists of two transport aids, one insulated container (6 liters) as well as a pair of safety goggles.

Please only use grinding jars of hardened or stainless steel for cryogenic grinding. When using jars made of other materials, inner tension may build up and lead to damages of the jar under extreme temperature variations.

Attention:

First, the jar is filled with sample and ball(s), then the lid is screwed tightly, and the jar is immersed with the transport aid in the container filled with liquid nitrogen. After a few minutes (the liquid nitrogen should no longer boil) the sample has been indirectly embrittled inside the jar which can now be removed with the help of the transport aid and clamped into the mill (here, the transport aid is removed). Please never fill liquid nitrogen into the grinding jar because it evaporates and causes a considerable overpressure inside the jar.

Grinding balls and grinding jars should always be selected from the same material.

Grinding balls are available in different diameters. The rule of thumb is: for efficient milling the ball should be at least 3 times larger than the largest particle in the sample. To avoid abrasion and wear it is essential to only use balls with identical diameter.

The number of grinding balls depends on the jar volume used. The document “Grinding Jar Ball Charge” in the Downloads section provides details about usable volumes, maximum feed sizes and correct filling of the jars with grinding balls for dry and wet milling as well as cell disruption.   Medium-hard, hard (up to Mohs hardness 4), and brittle samples are best pulverized by using the retaining frame 180° with grinding insert for sieves 180° as impact and shearing are the most suitable size reduction principles.
