Sample Preparation, Extraction and Analysis of Cannabis Joint webinar week by Retsch, CEM and Shimadzu

For the first time, the complete process of preparation, extraction and analysis of cannabis will be covered in a series of online seminars. For this purpose, there are three separate days, where the three participating companies Retsch, CEM and Shimadzu will conduct online webinars. Each webinar lasts 90 min and will also include an online demonstration. The webinars are free, hands-on, and provide a comprehensive overview of the entire process route to analytics.

Each company conducts two webinars with the same content, so that everyone interested can pick the best time slot for the time zone required. The Asian region should pick the first slot, the Americas the second. For Europeans, both time slots are suitable.

Shimadzu will open the seminar week on November 8th, followed by CEM on the 9th. The sample preparation part covered by Retsch will be conducted at the 10th.

Shimadzu: Cannabis Analytics

In the first seminar day, we will go into the analytics of cannabis ingredients and contaminants. We will focus on active ingredient testing (THC and cannabinoids) using HPLC, terpene analysis using GCMS, heavy metal determination using ICPMS, and pesticide/mycotoxin analysis using LCMS. We briefly introduce the techniques and go live to the instruments, where product specialists give hands-on demonstrations of the analysis techniques.

Topics

  • Introduction to cannabis analytics (Uwe Oppermann/ Stephan Schröder)
  • Drug analysis using HPLC- Cannabis Analyzer (Gesa Schad/ Vadim Kraft)
  • Determination of arsenic, cadmium, Lead and Mercury using the ICPMS-2030 (Jan Knoop/ Johannes Hesper)
  • Pesticide/ Mycotoxin Analysis using LCMS-8050 (Anja Grüning/ Julia Sander)
  • Terpene- Analysis using Headspace Method and GCMS-QP2020 NX (Manuel Braun/ Waldemar Weber)
  • Online demonstration with time to answer your questions

Quick and easy sample preparation for cannabis and hemp analysis

Cannabinoids are becoming increasingly important in pain and palliative medicine. The available therapeutic forms of cannabis flowers and cannabis extracts differ in terms of their pharmacokinetic properties. The most important therapeutically used cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) show different active properties (analgesic, antispasmodic, appetite stimulant, etc.). There are strict rules for the use of cannabis products and therefore quality control of the source materials is extremely important. CEM has developed applications for these studies with solvent extraction in EDGE and microwave digestion to subsequently analyze the following parameters quickly and accurately:

  • Potency
  • Pesticides
  • Elemental content (e.g. heavy metals)
  • Mycotoxins
  • Terpenes

RETSCH: Cannabis Overview - From raw material to end products, from quality control to small scale production

The third day of the seminar week is about the analysis-appropriate preparation of cannabis plants and related products. The RETSCH expert team will provide many valuable suggestions and tips for your work and will address the following questions:

Topics

  • How can samples such as flowers, other plant parts or even so-called edibles be homogenized completely and reproducibly?
  • What should be considered with tough, sticky or oily samples?
  • How do I create a homogeneous powder without losing volatile ingredients?
  • What options does Retsch offer to simplify the extraction of pesticides and ingredients?
  • Which mills are suitable for processing larger quantities for the extraction of CBD oils?
  • Extensive online demonstration and time for your questions!
