Measuring of mercury levels
in popular types of fish
With the increasing popularity of fish, one concern that has emerged is the possible presence of harmful materials such as mercury. Dr. Robert Taylor from Texas A&M University in College Station Texas recently purchased a Retsch ZM 200, with titanium grinding tools, in order to study mercury levels in various fish. Soon after the unit was purchased, the local television station ran a 5 minute news feature on this whole issue. Studies show that there are particularly high levels in canned tuna which poses a potential threat to pregnant women and young children. The conclusion is that older and bigger fish have the highest levels of mercury while the smaller younger fish have lower levels.
